The best DJ's know that Djing is first about being able to read people and then about being able to tap into that human experience and take it on a journey. Matt creates and plays music that gives emotion a chance to speak.
Matthew Jones (formally Matt Lavelle) was born in London 32 years ago. He has been Djing for the past 13 years in which the music he's been playing has been derided and lauded in equal measures. He started Djing in 1995 where he was co-promoter and resident for Octavia, a Kent based event. He also played for the University of Greenwich, Love and Millennium nights plus other guest slots at other local events.
From then on Matt wanted fresh challenges, and wanted to see how he would fair up against other aspiring DJ's in the fickle world of Djing. What better place is there to put this into practise than Ibiza!! So in 1998 he headed out there in the hope he would be able make a lasting impression on people with his music. He was starting from fresh in a place he'd only visited on holiday, and obviously there was about a thousand other people with the same idea.
That didn't faze Matt, he just got on with meeting people and trying to get slots at venues wherever he could. After three months of perseverance he got offered a residency at Gorms Garage where he would be playing to over three hundred people each night. He also played guest slots at the Milk Bar, Kremlin Bar, Kaos (now Eden) and the notorious New Star Caf» which was seen by most workers as the best after club experience.
He was asked to return for a second season's residency in 1999 at Gorms Garage, where he stayed until mid-June. Next he moved to a new residency at the flagging New Star, bought in specifically to get it back to being full most mornings. He did so within a week and was fast making a great impression with his music on this vastly competitive island.
Matt was also playing guest slots at the Ministry Magazine parties at the Caf» Bay Bar and for Pure Pleasure at Privilege (the world's largest club). He also held a weekly residency for Clued-up at Bar Universal, was the promoter and resident DJ for Octavia at Rumours (now Hush) and held guest slot's at Kremlin Bar, Itaca and Kiwi (now Orange Corner).
Whilst he was resident at Octavia he was asked to become Quid Pro Quo resident for the 2000 season. It was a brand new bar in Playa Den Bossa and they wanted Matt to give it a good start. He was starting to get his name established and was featured in Ministry Magazine and DJ Magazine, with a circulation exceeding 240,000. Matt was also playing for Weltreveden at club Summum plus guest slots at other venues.
He returned to the UK at the end of the 2000 season to take up a slot on Worldwide FM, an internet radio show with an estimated audience of 5000 worldwide.
Since then Matt has been concentrating on his production work. He's had a few guest slots, most notably for Kinky Malinky at the Glasshouse, London plus Guest DJ for the Clubclass and Hedkandi Brand's and also playing for Harderfaster at Turnmills, London.
With there being so many different genres and sub genres now, Matt usually likes to play a wide selection of styles. Whatever the music, be it electro to funky through to progressive and beyond he combines all the different elements together for an individually tailored experience.
